Quarterback Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints stands on the sidelines during a 2016 game

In his first year of eligibility, quarterback Drew Brees is a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026.

This is not surprising given Brees tremendous career. It included five seasons with the San Diego Chargers and 15 seasons and a Super Bowl win with the New Orleans Saints.

Some younger NFL fans may not even be aware that Brees was drafted by the Chargers and was traded by the team prior to the 2006 season.

That’s why the Los Angeles Chargers social media post about Brees’ HOF candidacy elicited plenty of commentary.

What The Los Angeles Chargers Posted

The Chargers posted a picture of Brees with the caption “closer to canton.”

Fans immediately reacted.

AJ Muse said: “yall can’t claim him”

When AJ Muse was challenged by a fan saying that the Chargers drafted Brees, he answered “99% of people are going to imagine a Saints #9.”

Kevin Eastin said: “lol. Chargers looting everyone else’s trophy case because theirs is empty.”

Cliff said: “Trying to claim a QB you dumped because he got hurt at the end of the year. That’s rich.”

Parody Sean Payton wrote: “Yall getting dragged for this and deserve it. Have some shame.”

With former Chargers draft pick Eli Manning also named as a HOF finalist, Dwayne J. Munch Jr. wondered if the Chargers would take credit for Manning also.

Orph said: “This might be the funniest thing I’ve seen all year!”

King of Shenanagins shut down the discussion by writing: “The Chargers drafted Eli manning, then traded for Philip Rivers to replace Brees. We’re NOT doing this..”
