Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama Says ‘We Owe Them One’ Ahead Of Rematch Vs. Knicks

On New Year’s Eve 2025, the NBA has nine exciting matchups for fans to enjoy. At 7:00 p.m. EST on NBA TV, the New York Knicks will take on the San Antonio Spurs.

That is a rematch of the 2025-26 Emirates NBA Cup Finals. The Knicks won that game 124-113 vs. the Spurs. Ahead of that matchup, center Victor Wembanyama commented on the rematch vs. New York. The third-year pro said, ” We owe them one. We owe ourselves one more than anything.” San Antonio wants to avenge that loss in the NBA Cup Finals.

Can the Spurs avoid losing to the Knicks for the second time in two weeks?

At 23-9, the San Antonio Spurs own the second-best record in the Western Conference. In 2025-26, the team has several impressive wins. They beat Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder three times this season. Additionally, the Spurs also have road wins vs. the Nuggets, Lakers, Rockets, and Raptors. One contender they have yet to beat in 2025-26 is the New York Knicks.

On Tuesday, December 16, the Knicks and Spurs met in the Emirates NBA Cup Finals. New York won that matchup, and Victor Wembanyama has not forgotten. Speaking with the media ahead of that matchup, Wemby said, “We owe them one.” San Antonio feels they could have won the Cup Finals, but let that game slip. If Wembanyama has anything to say, the Spurs will not go down without a fight on New Year’s Eve.

The previous meeting between the Knicks and Spurs was technically a consolation game. That matchup was never on the 82-game schedule. Both teams happened to make the Cup Finals. New Year’s Eve will be the first of two regular-season meetings between the Knicks and Spurs. They’ll meet again later in the year on Sunday, March 1. Devin Vassel will not be available for the Spurs on Wednesday. Stephon Castle is questionable due to a left thumb sprain.
