Three days after his father tragically passed away from injuries suffered in a house fire, Denny Hamlin addressed his father’s death and offered an update on his mother, who has been undergoing treatment for burns from the same fire that ravaged the couple’s Stanley, North Carolina home.
Hamlin, who had not spoken publicly since the Sunday night blaze leading to the death of his father, Dennis, and the hospitalization of his mother, Mary Lou, did so on Wednesday — New Year’s Eve.
See what Hamlin — a three-time Daytona 500 winner, perennial NASCAR Cup Series title contender and co-owner of 23XI Racing — had to say about the horrific events of Sunday.
House Fire Proved Devastating To Father, Mother Of Denny Hamlin
In case you missed it, Dennis and Mary Lou Hamlin were alone at home on Sunday and celebrating their wedding anniversary when their roughly 3,700-square-foot house erupted into flames around 6:20 p.m. local time.
The cause is currently unknown and under investigation.
Although the two managed to escape their residence before emergency medical personnel and fire crews arrived, their injuries were significant and required immediate transport to a nearby hospital. There, Dennis Hamlin died. He was 75.
As of Monday, Mary Lou Hamlin was listed in critical condition, according to Emergency Medical Services in Gaston County, North Carolina. She has been receiving treatment for severe burns at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Burn Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Breaking Silence On Family Tragedy, Denny Hamlin Says Mom Improving
Grieving the loss of his father, whose role in getting his racing career off the ground has been well-established, Denny Hamlin expressed gratitude on Wednesday afternoon to the many who have shared kind and caring words since Sunday night’s tragedy.
“Thank you to everyone who has reached out with condolences on my father’s passing,” Hamlin wrote on social media platform X. “My mother continues to improve, and our family truly appreciates the outpouring of support and the respect for our privacy during this time.”

On Tuesday, NASCAR itself joined the robust chorus of individuals in the NASCAR community posting sympathies and sending prayers.
“NASCAR extends its deepest condolences to Denny Hamlin and the entire Hamlin family,” the sanctioning body said in a statement. “Dennis Hamlin instilled a love of racing in his son, and sacrificed greatly to develop Denny into a world-class talent in the sport. We also continue to offer our thoughts and prayers to Denny’s mother, Mary Lou, and hope for her full recovery.”
Denny Hamlin boasts 60 Cup Series wins — all with Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), the organization where he’s spent his entire career. 23XI Racing, the company Hamlin co-owns with NBA legend Michael Jordan, is an up-and-coming outfit that placed two of its three drivers in the playoffs last season. So, Hamlin’s impact on the sport goes beyond his personal successes.
In 2025, Hamlin lost the championship in heartbreaking fashion in the season finale. Despite being admittedly crushed by such a narrow miss and saying he didn’t want to be in a race car for a while, Hamlin has indicated he plans to fulfill his contractual obligations to JGR. That means he’ll be behind the wheel of his No. 11 Toyota for another two seasons.
But for now, though, he just needs time to grieve.
