Despite standing shorter than nearly every other prospect in the 2026 NBA Draft class, Tanner has forced his way onto draft radars with his play this season. He’s breaking out as a sophomore for a surging Vanderbilt squad, boasting nearly every offensive and defensive tool a (generously) six-foot point guard could hope for. In a constantly upsizing NBA, will teams value an elite player without traditional height and size?

Tyler Tanner — Point Guard, Vanderbilt (20.3 years old)
Tyler Tanner Scouting Report & NBA Comparison
- Offensive role: Initiator Point Guard/Off-Ball Creator
- Defensive role: Off-Ball Disruptor/Point Guard Defender
It’s difficult to find contemporaries for a shorter player with Tanner’s blend of creation juice and athleticism, but Ty Lawson carved an NBA niche as a dynamic offensive threat with the strength and quickness to create some havoc on defense. His sparkling statistical profile and his innate feel for the game also mirror Sheppard, another smaller guard who impacts the game on both ends.
NBA Comparison: Ty Lawson, Reed Sheppard
Strengths
- Brilliant basketball player who rarely places the ball in harm’s way, next level awareness, anticipation and instincts on both ends of the floor
- Excellent on-and-off ball passer capable of making every pick-and-roll read and spraying the ball around as a connective passer
- Lightning quick hands and reaction time create deflections and turnover, excellent reading passing and driving intentions on defense.
- Strong on-and-off ball shooter who can adjust his release height and speed depending on the situation
- Explosive, bursty player for his size, fearless driver who draws fouls and attacks the paint aggressively and confidently
- Elite ball-handler with the control, dexterity and creativity to manipulate screens and create space in isolation
- Quick, tight lateral mover defending the ball, fast enough to mirror and cut off most drivers
Weaknesses
- Extremely limited height and slighter frame limits on-ball defensive potential, easy for bigger players to shoot over
- Lacks vertical explosion in traffic, especially off one foot, to finish around and through taller defenders
- Lack of height limits playmaking potential to some extent, simply can’t see some passing windows and open teammates
- Will get stuck and clipped on handoffs and screens, too weak and small to fight through stronger picks at times
2026 NBA Draft Projection: Round 1, Pick 15-30
Some NBA teams won’t have interest in Tanner because of his height, but the sharp organization that looks past that limitation and invests in him will reap the benefits. He’s a dominant two-way force with all of the skills, feel and tools to become one of the rare short guards to impact winning on great teams and even approach star-level value.
