Jonathan Kuminga Demanding Trade From Golden State Warriors Amid NBA Rumors

Jonathan Kuminga demanded a trade away from the Golden State Warriors on Thursday, the first day he becomes eligible to be moved, according to ESPN’s Anthony Slater and Shams Charania.

Prior to the season, Kuminga finally agreed to a two-year, $46.8 million deal with the Warriors to end a prolonged contract stalemate. As part of the deal, he waived his inherent no-trade clause.

The club option in the second year is designed for either the Warriors or another team if and when Kuminga is traded before the Feb. 5 deadline this season.

Kings, Bulls, Mavericks Want Jonathan Kuminga

The Sacramento Kings and Dallas Mavericks are among the teams eyeing Kuminga as “an intriguing part of their rebuild,” league sources told Slater and Charania.

The Chicago Bulls are also pursuing Kuminga, per Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports.

During the offseason, league sources suggested the Kings were open to including a protected first-round pick in trade talks for the 6-foot-7 wing.

However, according to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, it is now unlikely that Sacramento will offer a first-round draft pick this time around to acquire Kuminga.

“I mean, I’ve heard some teams that say they like him, but the reality of the situation is the team that’s had put some action behind their interest has been the Sacramento Kings,” Scotto said.

“Now over the summer, they were willing, from what I had heard, to offer a protected first round pick. That does not seem to be on the table as of now. We’ll see if that changes coming up in the next few weeks, but given the situation doesn’t seem likely.”

The ESPN duo noted that Golden State was targeting Trey Murphy III in the past, but the New Orleans Pelicans are rebuffing calls about Zion Williamson, Herb Jones, and Murphy.

Kuminga Has Been Out Of Warriors’ Rotation

Teams typically wouldn’t offer a first-round pick for a disgruntled player anyways.

After starting the first 12 games of the season, Kuminga was demoted to a bench role due to underwhelming play. He was then sidelined for seven games because of bilateral knee tendonitis.

Following a return to action in late November, Kuminga appeared in four games in a row, making another start on Dec. 6 in Cleveland, but he has been listed as DNP in 14 of Golden State’s past 17 games.

The five-year veteran hasn’t played since Dec. 18 at Philadelphia.

“I’m disappointed for him that things didn’t continue to go the way they did the first couple of weeks,” Kerr said recently, per Slater and Charania.

In 18 appearances (13 starts) this campaign, Kuminga is averaging 11.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, a career-high 2.4 turnovers, and 24.8 minutes per outing while shooting a career-low 43.1% from the field.
