Australian Open: Learner Tien Gives Assessment Of His Game After QF Loss To Alexander Zverev

20-year-old Californian Learner Tien came up on the short end of a four set Australian Open quarterfinal match against Alexander Zverev on Tuesday.

It is his second career meeting against Zverev. He won the first last season in a best of three set match in Acapulco.

Tien, coming off a spectacular Round of 16 win over Daniil Medvedev and the third of his career against Medvedev, is a rising star in the men’s game and could be the long-awaited Grand Slam champion that could break the US drought dating back to before he was born (2003 US Open – Andy Roddick).

Ben Shelton may have something to say about this notion, but the fact of the matter is that Tien is ascending the ATP rankings after a spectacular Fall 2025.

His game is a work-in-progress, a fact he acknowledged after his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance against Zverev.

What Learner Tien Said

Learner Tien, whose first name is derived from his mom’s profession as a teacher, believes his serve needs to improve for him to reach the highest levels of the sport.

He also believes he is not physically where he needs to be.

It did appear that Tien was starting to shorten points as if physical exhaustion was beginning to set in against Zverev.

Those pieces of his game will evolve as he matures and gets more match play at this level.

Tien is an easygoing likeable guy who prioritizes his family and still lives with them including his parents and younger sister Justice (named after his father’s profession as a lawyer) when he is not traveling for the ATP Tour.

Tien Added A Great Coach To His Team In 2025

The 2025 NextGen ATP Finals champion added 1989 French Open champion Michael Chang to his team.

Chang was a fan-favorite in his playing days for his tireless work ethic, hustle, and demeanor.

All of these qualities are ingrained in Tien’s DNA. The partnership should pay dividends for Tien and American tennis fans in the coming years.

Tien is currently the fourth highest ranked American behind Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz, and Tommy Paul.
