Mike Evans could very well be in a different uniform than we are used to seeing when Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season kicks off. For more than a decade, Evans has been synonymous with the Buccaneers: a franchise cornerstone who survived coaching changes, quarterback chaos, and eventually became a Super Bowl champion. But at 31 years old and coming off two injury-marred seasons, the relationship appears to be nearing its natural conclusion.
Mike Evans, Bucs Likely Headed For A Split
Evans played just eight games last season, finishing with 30 catches as lingering injuries continued to limit both his availability and explosiveness. Around the league, there’s a growing belief that his chances of re-signing in Tampa are below 50 percent.

Insiders around the team say the Buccaneers are preparing for life after Evans, while the veteran wideout himself would prefer to land with a legitimate contender and take one more real swing at another ring. The Patriots were floated as a potential fit, but league sources increasingly believe Buffalo is the team to watch.
Still, the San Francisco 49ers shouldn’t be ignored in this conversation. If Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings, and Kendrick Bourne are indeed on their way out, San Francisco is staring at a suddenly thin wide receiver room. They figure to be one of the biggest players on the WR market this offseason, and Mike Evans might even be a second-tier option, depending on how much they want to invest in the position.
As a veteran, Evans wouldn’t need to be “the guy” in Kyle Shanahan’s offense, and that’s exactly why the fit makes sense. His size, red-zone presence, and ability to win contested catches would give Brock Purdy a wide receiver safety blanket he hasn’t consistently had. In an offense built on timing and efficiency, Evans could thrive as a matchup nightmare without needing to carry the weekly target load.
Bills, 49ers Figure To Be Logical Landing Spots
Buffalo, though, may be the most logical landing spot. The Bills have spent the last couple of seasons searching for reliable weapons to complement Josh Allen, and the results have been inconsistent at best. Evans wouldn’t fix everything, but he’d immediately become Allen’s most trusted outside target. His experience, physicality, and ability to command defensive attention would open up the field for everyone else, something Buffalo’s offense has sorely lacked in high-leverage moments.
No matter where he ends up, the career résumé for Mike Evans is already complete. He’s surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in nine different seasons, ranks among the league’s most productive receivers of his era, and owns over 90 career touchdown catches. Add in multiple Pro Bowl selections and a Super Bowl ring, and there’s little left for him to prove.
