Brandon Aiyuk’s run in San Francisco did not end cleanly. It unraveled in stages.
Seven games into the 2024 season, he tore his ACL and MCL. During rehab, communication broke down. Sessions were missed. Contact with the team stalled. The 49ers eventually voided $26.15 million in guarantees. General manager John Lynch admitted he was “in the dark,” and Aiyuk chose not to file a grievance. The split became mutual.
What remains is a 28 year old wide receiver with new character questions attached to a very real production profile.
Brandon Aiyuk Injury Update and Contract Situation
Before the injury, Aiyuk was trending toward the top tier at his position.
In 2022 he posted 78 catches for 1,015 yards and 8 touchdowns. In 2023 he followed that with 75 catches for 1,342 yards and 7 touchdowns. That second season earned him PFF first team All Pro honors and a grade that trailed only Tyreek Hill across the league.
His 3.01 yards per route run ranked third in the NFL. Only five receivers have cleared that mark in the past decade: Tyreek Hill, Davante Adams, Stefon Diggs, Cooper Kupp, and Aiyuk. Targets in his direction produced a 124.0 passer rating.
This is an elite efficiency profile now attached to a complicated exit.
His market is projected to be between $10 million and $14 million annually on a short term deal packed with incentives. Teams can protect themselves with playing time triggers and performance bonuses. That structure makes the risk manageable if the knee recovery lags.

Washington checks several boxes. Aiyuk and Jayden Daniels share history from Arizona State. Aiyuk has said publicly he wants to reunite with his former college quarterback. General manager Adam Peters was in San Francisco’s front office when Aiyuk was drafted, which gives Washington insight into both the talent and the personality.
On the field, the fit is clean. Terry McLaurin averaged 15.1 yards per reception in 2025 as Washington’s primary outside threat. Pairing Aiyuk with McLaurin creates a legitimate 1A and 1B combination. Safeties would have to choose, opening RPO and play action windows that fueled Washington’s postseason run.
A short prove it deal limits exposure if the knee needs more time. For a roster close to a Super Bowl push, the risk to reward balance makes sense.
Pittsburgh Steelers Wide Receiver Targets
The Steelers have cycled through options at WR2 without solving the problem. Mike Williams, Van Jefferson, and Calvin Austin III all logged snaps opposite DK Metcalf. None consistently forced defenses to tilt coverage. That lack of stress limits how often Pittsburgh can isolate Metcalf deep.
Aiyuk’s 2023 profile fits what Pittsburgh wants. He caught 70 percent of his outside deep targets and graded as a strong blocker on the perimeter. The Steelers build through the run game and attack vertically when defenses overcommit. Aiyuk does not need to be the focal point. He needs to be the secondary threat that makes single coverage dangerous.
The medical risk is real. Pittsburgh would be signing a player coming off a multi ligament knee injury with a recent history of friction. A fully incentivized one year contract caps the downside. If he is healthy and motivated, the value could swing heavily in their favor.

Justin Herbert finished 2025 with 7.28 yards per attempt, ranking 21st in the league. His average depth of target sat at 8.12 yards. For a quarterback with his arm talent, those numbers suggest a lack of true perimeter explosion.
Ladd McConkey works effectively from the slot. Tre Harris projects as a developmental outside option. Keenan Allen operated underneath in 2025. None consistently command over the top safety attention.
Aiyuk at his peak fills that role. He stretches the field, wins on vertical routes, and blocks with intent in the run game. Jim Harbaugh wants a physical, downfield, balanced offense. That description aligns with Aiyuk’s best tape.
The Chargers have the cap flexibility to absorb a short term contract without major restructuring. By the time free agency opens in March, the medical picture should be clearer. Harbaugh also has a track record of channeling strong personalities into productive seasons. In Los Angeles, the character concern may carry less weight than the upside.

The character cloud exists. The knee history is significant. But a receiver who graded second only to Tyreek Hill two seasons ago, available on a heavily incentivized deal, will not linger on the market. Washington offers familiarity and quarterback chemistry. Pittsburgh offers immediate need and structural protection. The Chargers offer the quarterback ceiling. At least one of them is likely to act quickly. The upside justifies it.
