Boutte had become Drake Maye’s favorite downfield target, catching 33 passes for 551 yards and a career-high six touchdowns in 2025.
But New England carried seven receivers with legitimate roster cases, and only so many game-day snaps to distribute among them.
Executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf addressed the numbers crunch directly during a press conference this week.
“We feel really good about our receiver group,” Wolf said, adding that the remaining players can line up at multiple spots and “complement each other well.”
The Patriots’ own post-trade breakdown, published on Patriots.com, projected A.J. Brown, Romeo Doubs, DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams and Chism to fill out the 53-man roster.
That leaves Chism inside the circle rather than fighting from outside it.

As a rookie in 2025, Chism appeared in eight regular-season games, catching three passes for 75 yards and a touchdown while adding 16 kickoff returns. The Boston Globe noted he logged only 92 offensive snaps and 59 special teams snaps, a modest workload that his current camp is threatening to expand.
