The New England Patriots traded wide receiver Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans on Monday, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that New England received safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round draft pick in return.
The move reshapes a crowded receiver room and could create more opportunities for Efton Chism III.
What is confirmed in the Boutte deal
Boutte is headed to Houston in exchange for Reed and the late-round pick. Reed has potential as a future defensive contributor, though he was mostly used on special teams by the Texans.
Boutte was one of the Patriots’ productive draft picks at wide receiver. Last season, he served as quarterback Drake Maye’s top deep-threat option, finishing with 33 catches for 551 yards and six touchdowns.
Why the Patriots moved Boutte
New England added veteran receiver Romeo Doubs and A.J. Brown, giving the team greater depth at the position.
With those additions, Boutte’s snap count was likely to take a significant hit even after his productive season.
The trade allows the Patriots to receive a player and a draft pick for Boutte rather than risk losing him in free agency next year.
It also gives Boutte an opportunity to increase his snap count in Houston and improve his regular-season production ahead of his next contract.
Efton Chism could benefit from the opening
The Patriots had considered carrying seven receivers in 2026, illustrating the depth of the group. Boutte’s departure makes the roster picture less crowded and keeps the door open for other improving receivers to receive more opportunities, including DeMario Douglas, Kyle Williams and Chism.
Chism is a 2025 undrafted rookie success story, and the trade makes it more likely that he can stick around longer.
The move does not settle the full receiver rotation, but it gives Chism a clearer opportunity to build on his place in the group.
New England still has receiver depth
Even without Boutte, the Patriots still have one of the better wide receiver rooms in the NFL if Williams, Douglas and Chism take a production jump.
Brown is capable of dominating against man coverage, while Doubs is a versatile playmaker and separator.
Mack Hollins adds another option who can win deep and contribute as an extra blocker.
The trade’s long-term calculation
The deal does not make the Patriots a better football team on paper today, but it gives New England a return for a player who was likely headed for free agency next year.
From the Patriots’ perspective, it is a business decision with a longer-term focus.
There is another side to the move: New England is sending Boutte to an AFC contender with substantial talent already on its roster.
Whether Reed and a seventh-round pick prove to be sufficient compensation will be judged over time, but the immediate effect is a more open path for receivers such as Chism, Douglas and Williams.
