Mauricio Pochettino is fighting to save his job at Chelsea and the outcome is likely to have an impact on Conor Gallagher’s future.

One of the most uncertain factors in the Chelsea squad this season has centred around Gallagher, who has often been captain of the side and is a mainstay of the team.

Yet some members of the Chelsea board see him as a sellable asset that could help their financial status, as a homegrown player that could bring in close to £50million in pure profit and is also replaceable.

Mauricio Pochettino Wants Conor Gallagher To Stay

Pochettino’s use of Gallagher across this term has suggested he is pivotal to the team build though and if he stays in the job, Pochettino wants him to stay.

With such a strong bond, Gallagher has held confidence that a breakthrough on a new contract could yet be possible. He wants to stay at the club and believes his performance levels – and having a place within the England set-up – reflect the fact he deserves to stay.

Gallagher has made 31 Premier League starts this season and has weighed in with nine goal contributions. More than that, he has often set the tone for Chelsea as one of few players that can be relied on for intense displays. Gareth Southgate admires him too, and is likely to pick him for Euro 2024.

Yet if Pochettino leaves Chelsea, the chances of Gallagher leaving too will increase.

He has one year remaining on his contract after this season and so far there have not been fresh talks over him staying.

Tottenham are interested in signing him – but would not come close to matching a £50milion valuation.

Newcastle are also interested but sources suggest Gallagher would prefer not to move so far from his home base in Surrey.

Chelsea face Aston Villa at the weekend, hoping to keep alive faint hopes of reaching a high enough league position to qualify for Europe next season.

If that is not achieved then it is very likely Pochettino will be hearing bad news when it comes to his end-of-season review.
