2025 NFL Draft: Top Five QBs Strengths & Weaknesses

With the 2025 NFL Draft around the corner, teams in need of a QB will be evaluating all options in the draft.
The projected top five QBs in the 2025 NFL Draft are Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders, Jaxson Dart, Jalen Milroe, and Tyler Shough.
It is a fairly weak QB class in the 2025 NFL Draft, but it is the most important position in the NFL.
At least two QBs will go in round one, with the potential of three going in the first round. Ward is widely expected to go first overall, and Sanders will go, possibly top three in the 2025 NFL Draft. Jaxson Dart is a potential QB going in round one. Jalen Milroe and Tyler Shough are not expected to be selected in round one.
Top Five QBs Strengths & Weaknesses
Each QB has some strengths and weaknesses.
Cam Ward
Strengths: Cam Ward has shown significant improvement. He has a calm and cool demeanor. This is what a QB needs to have to lead a team. Ward is creative in and out of structure and can push the ball downfield and scramble. He has great improvisation skills and can elude pressure.
Weaknesses: One negative is that he can be nonchalant, which leads to forced plays. Ward needs to improve his mechanics for more consistent ball spiraling and can drift in the pocket too much, which could be challenging against NFL defenses.
Shedeur Sanders
Strengths: Shedeur Sanders is polished with strong mechanics. Sanders has proven to have the ability to lead teams effectively, as evident in the turnaround at Colorado. He limits turnovers.
Weaknesses: One concern is that he tends to drift back and take sacks. There are questions about his ability to make progression reads in real time, especially when getting off his first read. This could be troublesome in the NFL.
Jaxson Dart
Strengths: Dart has impressive size, athleticism, and arm strength. He can make some high-level throws and offers mobility as a player who can be effective on designed runs.
Weaknesses: Dart is often seen leaning too heavily on a quick first read before deciding to scramble, which may spell doom in the NFL. His decision-making under pressure is questionable at best.
Jalen Milroe
Strengths: Milroe is explosive with his legs and has impressive physical talent and arm strength. He gets praised for his mental toughness. Milroe has been compared with Jalen Hurts for his resilience.
Weaknesses: Inconsistencies in his play, especially against strong defenses, may hurt the prospect in the NFL. His third and fourth down accuracy is concerning, along with the fact that he struggled to play on the road.
Tyler Shough
Strengths: Shough has a strong arm with a good delivery, and he can be mobile. His mental toughness and ability to deliver under pressure have been highlighted by talent evaluators.
Weaknesses: Age and multiple injuries are major red flags. His consistency over his college career isn’t strong. There is also skepticism about his ability to transition to the NFL given his history.
How Many Of The Top Five QBs Will Thrive In The NFL?
Cam Ward will go number one overall in the NFL Draft, and there seems to be a major difference between him and every other QB in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Draft scouts and evaluators have Ward clearly above all other QBs in this draft class.
Ward will certainly be given the chance to be a good QB, and he should do fairly well in the NFL.
Shedeur Sanders is a big question mark for teams. He may go in the top three or slip a bit. There is a mixed reaction regarding Sanders. He has a good arm but struggles to get off his first read. This is a bad trait for a QB in the NFL. Sanders may get the chance to start in his rookie campaign, depending on the team that selects him. Sanders has a chance to be a decent QB in the NFL, but there is also the chance he becomes a backup QB.
Dart, Milroe, and Shough are likely to be more backup QB options. It is unlikely either of the three will become franchise-level starting QB options.
