The 2026 FIFA World Cup is underway amid intense controversy regarding ticket affordability, as a local U.S. official hits out at soccer’s governing body.

U.S. Mayor Slams World Cup Ticket Prices

The United States Men’s National Team is set to launch its campaign under manager Mauricio Pochettino against Paraguay at the Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood, California.

However, high costs have threatened a full house, prompting sharp criticism from local leadership.

Irvine Mayor Larry Agran publicly condemned the pricing structure, expressing deep concern over how the tournament is locking out everyday sports fans.

Agran said (Via TalkSport):“I’m very concerned about that. Thank goodness for TV. People of course can participate by watching television, but it concerns me that the pricing of these things prices out 90 percent of Americans. It’s very troubling for me.”

“That’s a bigger problem than I’m able to tackle by myself here in the city of Irvine.”

This issue has been a consistent topic going into the tournament and could have a negative impact on the USMNT ahead of their clash against Paraguay.

World Cup Ticket Prices Threaten USMNT Clash

The empty seats expected at the USMNT opener follow similar scenes during Thursday’s group-stage match between South Korea and Czechia at Guadalajara Stadium, which also saw thousands of vacant spots.

Reports indicate that roughly 180,000 tickets remained available on official resale platforms on the week of the tournament opener, with FIFA’s own portal holding 176,000 group-stage tickets.

Fans and officials have directed their anger at FIFA’s implementation of a “dynamic pricing” model, where ticket fees fluctuate in real-time based on market demand.

For the highly anticipated USA vs Paraguay fixture, the entry barriers have remained staggeringly high since sales launched.

Premium Category 1 tickets are priced at an astronomical $2,735, while mid-tier Category 2 options are locked in at $1,940.

Even the cheapest tier, Category 3, demands a hefty $1,120 just to get through the gates.
