23 years after 28 Days Later hit theaters, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland reteam for a sequel, 28 Years Later. Will the horror franchise find a new audience? View 28 Years Later’s opening weekend box office predictions and odds below.
What Is 28 Years Later About?
It’s been nearly three decades since the rage virus wreaked havoc on the world and led to the collapse of society.
A community of survivors lives on an isolated island that can only be reached by one single heavily guarded causeway.
When a small group chooses to leave the island to explore the mainland, they quickly learn that the infected are not the only people they should be worried about.
28 Years Later stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, and Ralph Fiennes.
Oscar winner Boyle directs 28 Years Later from a script by Academy Award nominee Garland. The duo is listed as producers alongside Andrew Macdonald, Peter Rice, and Bernie Bellew.
This is the third film in the 28 Days Later franchise, behind 2002’s 28 Days Later and 2007’s 28 Weeks Later. Boyle elected not to direct 28 Weeks Later and act as an executive producer.
28 Years Later opens in theaters on June 20.

There is certainly a lot of hype behind 28 Years Later. The spectacular first trailer earned the second-most views in the first 24 hours of its release of any horror movie trailer, with 60.2 million global views.
Only 2019’s It: Chapter Two had more views, with 96 million.
Will these views lead to box office results?
28 Years Later is currently projected to earn around $30 million domestically for its opening weekend. That’s a good start for a movie that only cost $60 million to make.
28 Years Later is the only new horror offering this weekend, so it should attract adult audiences.
How to Train Your Dragon should remain strong with a $40 million second weekend, while Pixar’s Elio should land between $20 million and $30 million.
