Argentina Open

The ATP 250 Tournament known as the Argentina Open is underway in Buenos Aires, and tennis fans have already received some great surprises.

Here are three noteworthy surprises from the 2025 Argentina Open.

1. Camila Giorgi Interviews Players

33-year-old former Italian tennis star Camila Giorgi abruptly retired from the sport in 2024.  The former World No. 26 left more questions than answers about why she quickly and quietly exited the game last May without letting anyone know.  She has resurfaced in Buenos Aires, showing excellent Spanish skills, as she interviews the players.

2. Diego Schwartzman’s Retirement Plans Are Delayed

32-year-old Argentinian tennis star Diego Schwartzman is retiring after the tournament.  He received thunderous applause when he entered the court for what many believed was his final match against World No. 36 player Nicolas Jarry.  Schwartzman’s retirement is delayed for another day after he upset Jarry in a tough three-set match.

Although the 5’7″ Schwartzman is nicknamed El Peque for his short stature, he used every bit of his talent and game to excel at the highest level. He was a 2020 French Open finalist, winner of eight titles, and reached a career-high of World No. 8 in October 2020.

Schwartzman is beloved in his country and on the ATP Tour so delaying his retirement by at least one day was good news for everyone except Jarry.

3. Joao Fonseca’s Winning Debut Dazzles Fans

18-year-old Brazilian phenom Joao Fonseca is playing in the first Argentina Open of his career. The World No. 112 took out World No. 38 Tomas Etcheverry in straight sets.

The atmosphere when Fonseca plays resembles a soccer game; fans are loud and boisterous in their support of the teenager.
