49ers, RB Christian McCaffrey Agree to Two-Year, $38M Contract Extension

The San Francisco 49ers and NFL star running back Christian McCaffrey, the reigning Offensive Player of the Year, have agreed to a two-year, $38 million contract extension, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday. The deal was negotiated by WME Football.

McCaffrey, who turns 28 on Friday, is averaging $19 million with this new deal and will receive an additional $8 million over what he was slated to make in 2024 and 2025 while adding $24 million in guarantees. His new deal will keep him in San Francisco through the 2027 season.

Following the new contract agreement, McCaffrey was back with the 49ers for the start of the mandatory minicamp Tuesday after skipping the voluntary portion of the team’s offseason program.

McCaffrey, a 5-foot-11, 210-pound feature back, had two years remaining on the four-year, $64 million extension he signed with the Carolina Panthers in 2020.

However, those two seasons had zero remaining guaranteed dollars, with base salaries of $11.8 million in 2024 and $12 million in 2025. The extension guarantees those salaries and comes with $8 million more for McCaffrey.

The three-time first-team All-Pro is coming off a season in which he recorded 2,023 yards from scrimmage and 21 total touchdowns. He also led the league in touches (339) and rushing yards (1,459).

In Super Bowl LVIII against the Kansas City Chiefs, McCaffrey rushed 22 times for 80 yards while catching all eight of his targets for 80 yards and a touchdown.

The 49ers acquired McCaffrey from the Panthers at the 2022 trade deadline after sending 2023 second-round, third-round, and fourth-round picks along with a 2024 fifth-round selection to Carolina.

In other news, 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who is still awaiting a long-term contract extension, has not reported to minicamp as of Tuesday morning. He is subject to fines in excess of $104,000 if he doesn’t arrive over the next three days.

Former Washington Commanders tight end Logan Thomas also agreed to a one-year contract with the Niners on Monday. It was a much-needed signing after San Francisco lost Charlie Woerner and Ross Dwelley to the Atlanta Falcons in free agency.
