If Aaron Rodgers plays for the New York Jets in 2025, his new offensive coordinator will be former Detroit Lions passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand.

Tanner Engstrand Becomes Jets OC

New head coach Aaron Glenn is bringing some friends from Detroit to New York.

Engstrand, 42, will now be the Jets’ playcaller for the 2025 season.

Engstrand spent his last four seasons in Detroit working for head coach Dan Campbell and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

As a member of the Lions, Engstrand was an offensive assistant (2020), offensive quality control coach (2021), tight ends coach (2022), and passing game coordinator (2022-2024).

Engstrand’s coaching career began as a graduate assistant under Jim Harbaugh at San Diego. After a dozen seasons at San Diego, Engstrand was an offensive analyst at Michigan (2018) and the offensive coordinator for the XFL’s DC Defenders (2020).

The Lions became one of the league’s most prolific offenses during Engstrand’s tenure. In 2024, Detroit ranked second in yards per game (409.5), second in passing yards per game (263.2), and first in points per game (33.2).

Jared Goff became an MVP finalist in 2024, with 4,629 passing yards, 37 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, a 72.4 completion percentage, and a 111.8 quarterback rating.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Jets also hired Chris Harris as their passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach.

Will Aaron Rodgers Return In 2025?

Will Rodgers be on the Jets in 2025? With a new coach and GM, the future of Rodgers as the Jets quarterback is now the biggest question heading into the offseason.

Jets owner Woody Johnson said Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey will have the final say on whether they want to bring back Rodgers for the 2025 season.

Rodgers, 41, has contemplated retirement and will likely do so again this offseason before committing to a 21st season. However, Rodgers is under contract with the Jets next season.

The Jets organization had a tumultuous 5-12 season that saw their head coach and general manager fired.

Despite the distractions, Rodgers put together a top-10 statistical season for quarterbacks in the NFL. Rodgers finished the 2024 season with 3,897 passing yards (8th) and 28 touchdowns (T-7th).
