Alex Michelsen

Alex Michelsen is having his career-best Grand Slam tournament at the 2025 Australian Open. The 20-year-old Californian is into the fourth round after impressive wins over World No. 12 Stefanos Tsitsipas and World No. 19 Karen Khachanov.

In his post-match interview after defeating Khachanov, Michelsen sent a special shoutout to his mother, Sondra.

What Alex Michelsen Said To His Mom

He apologized for not having much time to talk because he was busy.  Michelsen ended the message by saying he loved and missed her and hoped all was well at home in California.

Michelsen is the second-generation tennis player in his family. Sondra, a retired teacher who earned the Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship in 1989, played college tennis at San Diego State University. Alex’s dad, Erik, was an All-American tennis player at the University of Redlands (Redlands, California).

Alex Michelsen’s ascent has happened quickly.  He turned pro in 2023 and is currently ranked World No. 42.  Some compare his height and game to Reilly Opelka.  Others say that he and his fellow American 2024 ATP Next Gen Finals participants Nishesh Basavareddy and Learner Tian, both 19, are giving vibes of the Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, and Jim Courier era of American tennis in the early 1990s.  We should be so lucky to see something like that again.

Michelsen is not thinking about any of this. The winner of the Francisco Cerundolo (World No. 31) and World No. 8 Alex de Minaur third-round match will be his Round of 16 opponent.  Both opponents will be challenging, but with de Minaur, Michelsen will have to deal with the Australian fans cheering for the hometown hero.

He has never faced Cerundolo, but he is 1-1 against de Minaur.  Michelsen defeated him in straight sets on the outdoor hard courts in Los Cabos, but he lost in straight sets at Roland Garros.
