Tennis Umpire Pavel Atanasov Banned For Betting Violations, Withdraws Appeal

While most of the tennis world is focused on the Wimbledon final weekend, there are players outside of Wimbledon making tennis news for differing reasons on this Friday, July 11. They include Alexander Zverev, Grigor Dimitrov, and Venus Williams.

Alexander Zverev

After publicly struggling to find results and joy with his tennis game, Alexander Zverev has withdrawn from next week’s EFG Swiss Open Gstaad, an ATP 250 tournament. Only he knows what he is going through, but perhaps he can take heart in 2025 Wimbledon finalist Amanda Anisimova‘s journey with mental health issues and finding her passion and purpose in tennis after stepping away in 2023.

Grigor Dimitrov

Jannik Sinner is in the Wimbledon final. Many wonder if that would have been the case if Grigor Dimitrov had not gotten injured when he was up two sets against Sinner in the Round of 16.

Dimitrov shared a recent photo in a hospital bed. He admits it has been difficult, but he thanked everyone for the overwhelming support. It is unclear if he had to get surgery for the partially torn pectoral muscle.

A US Open return is what has been reported, but many wonder if he will be 100% by then. The US Open starts on August 24. Dimitrov was planning to play mixed doubles with Aryna Sabalenka in the new mixed doubles format on August 19, but that may not be feasible.

Venus Williams

Every summer when the US Open hardcourt series gets underway, the Mubadala Citi Open in Washington, DC attracts big stars to play. That is no different this year with the interesting addition of Venus Williams who accepted a wildcard. Williams has not played competitive tennis this year but had previously been announced as joining Frances Tiafoe, Taylor Fritz, and Madison Keys at the December 4 Charlotte Invitational exhibition which is in its second year of existence.
