Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson suffered an injury during Thursday night’s preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Richardson drew the start in the Colts’ preseason opener. According to head coach Shane Steichen, Richardson would start the game and play about a “quarter and a half.” Then, Daniel Jones would relieve Richardson and play until halftime.

Things did not go as planned for Steichen.

On the Colts’ second drive of the game, Richardson dropped back to pass on second down. Ravens linebacker David Ojabo came into the backfield untouched and dismantled Richardson with a huge hit.

Richardson never saw Ojabo coming from his right side.

Replays showed Richardson’s finger pointing in an unorthodox direction. The Colts’ 2023 first-round pick had to leave the game with a dislocated pinky finger.

Richardson finished the game, completing 2 of 3 passes for 21 yards. The Ravens nearly intercepted Richardson’s lone incompletion.

Besides inconsistent play, Richardson’s biggest issue has been injuries. As a rookie, Richardson only played in four games before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury. Richardson played 11 games last season but missed time with foot, back, and hip injuries. Steichen also benched Richardson due to poor play.

Daniel Jones Takes Over For Anthony Richardson

Jones was only supposed to play half a quarter. Then, he would start for the Colts in Week 2 of the preseason.

Due to the Richardson injury, Jones was thrust into the action in the first quarter.

Jones finished the half, completing 10 of 21 for 144 yards with zero touchdowns or interceptions. Jones led the Colts to a pair of field goals. However, he could not get the offense in the end zone.

Third-string quarterback Riley Leonard guided the Colts to their first touchdown of the game on their second drive in the third quarter.

The Colts quarterback competition took an interesting turn on Thursday night. Richardson barely played and left with an injury. It’s hard to judge a quarterback who only threw three passes.

On the flip side, Jones played most of the first half but did nothing to separate himself from Richardson.

The Colts’ second preseason game is scheduled for Aug. 16 against the Packers.
