Carlos Alcaraz

The 2024 ATP Finals will begin in Turin, Italy, on November 10, 2024. This year-end event features the top eight men’s singles and doubles players.

Two-time defending champion Novak Djokovic‘s withdrawal from the event marks the first time since 2001 that at least one of the Big Three—Djokovic, Roger Federer, or Rafael Nadal—has not participated in the ATP Finals.

The eight singles players are Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Taylor Fritz, Casper Ruud, Alex de Minaur, and Andrey Rublev.

Round robin group stage is how the tournament begins with players divided into two groups of four players each.

Ilie Nastase Group

The Ilie Nastase Group features Sinner, Medvedev, Fritz, and de Minaur.  The World No. 1 Sinner won two Grand Slams this year (Australian and US Open).  Medvedev is the 2020 ATP Finals champion defeating Dominic Thiem in the final match.  Fritz is making his second appearance at the ATP Finals with the first in 2022.  De Minaur is making his first appearance at the ATP Finals.

This is an interesting group with mixed experience.  Sinner was the best player in men’s tennis (and on the hardcourts) in 2024, but he withdrew from the Paris Masters with an illness so his health and physical fitness may be an issue.

Next to Sinner, Medvedev is the best hardcourt player in the group with plenty of experience at this event as a former champion.

Fritz and de Minaur had the best years of their careers so they are coming in with plenty of confidence.

If Sinner is healthy, he is the favorite in this group with Medvedev on his heels.

John Newcombe Group

The John Newcome Group consists of Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Ruud, and Andrey Rublev.  While Sinner was the best in men’s tennis for the entire year, Zverev had the best fall season and as a result, took the World No. 2 ranking from Alcaraz.  Zverev is also the 2018 and 2021 ATP Finals champion defeating Djokovic and Medvedev en route to those titles.

Alcaraz won two Grand Slams in 2024 on clay and grass (French Open and Wimbledon).  Ruud and Rublev have been up and down this year.

Zverev is the favorite in this group.
