ATP Tennis: Jannik Sinner Wins China Open; Gael Monfils Makes Announcement

ATP Tennis: Jannik Sinner Wins China Open; Gael Monfils Makes Announcement

It was a bittersweet day in ATP tennis, and Jannik Sinner and Gael Monfils are experiencing different career milestones.

24-year-old Jannik Sinner won his 21st career title at the China Open. Sinner defeated American Learner Tien 6-2, 6-2.

This is Sinner’s third title of the 2025 season which also included Grand Slam victories at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Sinner and his closest competitor Carlos Alcaraz, the Japan Open champion, continue to separate themselves from the rest of the pack.

Alcaraz is skipping the Shanghai Open to recover from the ankle injury he suffered in the early rounds of the Japan Open so Sinner will move up to the top seed in the tournament which will feature Novak Djokovic in a tournament draw for the first time since the US Open.

Gael Monfils

We knew the day was coming, and on Wednesday, Gael Monfils told tennis fans that his career will end in 2026 at the Rolex Paris Masters next November. Monfils turned pro in 2004 and has been a vibrant, charismatic, and enertaining player to watch ever since.

Monfils, who turns 40 next September, can expect plenty of tributes as he circles the globe next year.

He has posted an impressive 583-350 win-loss record while winning 13 ATP titles and earning over $24 million putting him at 24th all-time in earnings.

Monfils is married to WTA player Elina Svitolina, and though I am not sure it is in the plans, it would be great to see the two play mixed doubles during his final year in competitive tennis.

In true Monfils fashion, he posted a fun video featuring Svitolina and retired French tennis players Jo Wilfried-Tsonga, Gilles Simon, and Richard Gasquet.
