Mayfield has been a revelation in Tampa. To reward him for his efforts, the Bucs have reworked Mayfield’s deal.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Buccaneers will now give their quarterback $30 million guaranteed in 2026.
Mayfield signed a three-year contract extension worth $100 million with the Bucs during the 2024 offseason. With incentives, the deal can reach $115 million. However, Mayfield had no guarantees in his contract for 2026.
The deal now gives Mayfield financial security in the final year of his contract.
Mayfield sat down with CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco to talk about the reworked deal and hopes to sign a long-term extension in the future.
“Right now, I’m under contract through ’26,” Mayfield said. “So it was really just about getting guaranteed money for ’26, and they did that. And that’s all I can ask for. I signed the contract. I knew what it was. Right now, it’s winning. I know good things will happen after that. I trust this place. I love being here. Obviously, used to bouncing around. I’ve done that before, but I don’t want to leave. It’s how can we win right now? We have a team that’s really, really well built and [General Manager Jason Licht] and those guys did it. So, if we win right now good things will happen.”
Baker Mayfield Has Resurrected His Career In Tampa
Mayfield has been worth every penny in Tampa.
After four seasons with the Cleveland Browns and a split year with the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams, Mayfield signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Bucs in March 2023. Mayfield was brought in to compete for the starting quarterback position with Kyle Trask and John Wolford for the right to replace Tom Brady.
Mayfield won the job and has never given it back.
Mayfield threw for 4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in his first season with the Bucs. Mayfield led the Bucs to a Wild Card win over the Philadelphia Eagles before ultimately losing to the Detroit Lions on the Divisional Weekend.
Mayfield followed up 2023’s success with an even better 2024 campaign. Mayfield recorded career highs in yards (4,500), touchdowns (41), and completion percentage (71.4).
Mayfield led the Bucs to their fourth consecutive NFC South title. However, the Washington Commanders upset the Bucs in the Wild Card round by a score of 23-20.
The Buccaneers are favored to win the NFC South in 2025.
