The game of basketball has certainly changed over the last decade. Teams and players are utilizing the three point shot more and more each season that passes, and the long ball skill is one that is essentially a must-have for players at every position. So when a statistic says that Bronny James has reached a Michael Jordan level in at least one aspect, take the information with a grain of salt.

Bronny James Has As Many 3-Pointers As A Rookie As Michael Jordan

Jordan was never much of a three-point shooter, and certainly not early on in his career. He hoisted 52 total attempts during his rookie season in 1984-85, just slightly more than how many the Boston Celtics have shot on average per game this year. He made 9 of those 52 shots, good enough for a 17.3% clip, which actually saw a decrease in year two.

Those 9 makes came in 3,144 minutes of play.

Heading into the final game of the 2024-25 NBA season, Bronny James has equaled Jordan’s total number, as he too sits at nine 3-pointers made in his rookie campaign. James has made his attempts at a 30% clip, hitting Jordan’s mark by taking 22 fewer shots. He’s played just 143 total minutes.

That is about where the comparisons end. James is averaging 2.2 points per in his 26 appearances, which have mostly come in garbage time when the Lakers are either up or down big. Jordan, conversely, averaged 28.2 points per contest while playing and starting in all 82 of them, and was named Rookie of the Year and qualified for Second Team All-NBA in Year 1.

When Bronny James isn’t getting his limited minutes at the NBA level, he has been excelling in the G-League. In 11 appearances with the South Bay Lakers, he averaged 21.9 points per game, and hits threes at a respectable clip (38%).
