With injuries mounting in training camp, the Cleveland Browns are bringing in their fifth quarterback, Tyler Huntley, to battle for the starting job.

Brown Sign QB Tyler Huntley

The quarterback competition in Cleveland added another player.

The Browns announced the signing of Huntley on Tuesday.

Huntley enters his sixth NFL season after originally signing with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent out of Utah in 2020.

In his five seasons, Huntley has become a capable backup quarterback. Huntley has appeared in 25 games with 14 starts (5-9). Huntley saw his most NFL action during the 2022 season. After Lamar Jackson went down toward the end of the season, Huntley became the full-time starter, going 2–2 to close the year.

Huntley started for the Ravens in the Wild Card game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Huntley completed 17-of-29 passes for 226 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. The dual-threat quarterback also ran for 54 yards. However, Huntley made a costly error when he fumbled near the goal line, and the Bengals returned it for a touchdown.

For his career, Huntley has thrown for 2,786 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions with a 64.6 completion percentage. The 27-year-old has 644 yards on the ground and five touchdowns.

Huntley began last season with the Browns in training camp. After his release in Cleveland, Huntley signed with the Miami Dolphins and started five games (2–3) in place of the injured Tua Tagovailoa.

Browns QB Competition Disrupted By Injuries

At the start of training camp, the Browns had four quarterbacks competing for the starting job: Kenny Pickett, Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, and Shadeur Sanders.

Injuries to three of the quarterbacks have disrupted the training camp battle. Pickett, who many pegged as the frontrunner, has not participated in team drills since suffering a hamstring injury on July 26.

Gabriel, the team’s third-round pick, was limited in practice on Monday due to hamstring tightness. Sanders, Cleveland’s fifth-round pick, sat out on Aug. 2 with arm soreness.

Ironically, the oldest quarterback on the team, Flacco (40), is listed first on the depth chart.

Pickett and Gabriel are not expected to play in the team’s preseason opener on Aug. 8. This means that Flacco, Sanders, and Huntley could receive significant reps and give them an edge in the quarterback competition.
