Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo is expected to be sidelined for approximately two to four weeks due to a right calf strain, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Thursday.
Giannis Antetokounmpo To Miss More Games
Antetokounmpo suffered the non-contact injury three minutes into the first quarter of Wednesday night’s win over the Detroit Pistons. He was able to leave the court under his own power, limping first to the bench and finally to the locker room.
Head coach Doc Rivers had denied reports that it was an Achilles injury. He confirmed after the game that Antetokounmpo underwent an MRI.
“I didn’t know what it was,” Rivers said. “I just wanted the trainers to attend to him.”

Antetokounmpo fell to the floor while trying to get back on defense.
“I thought the bump, if you watch, the bump drive, that’s what threw him off balance,” Rivers continued. “He got bumped then and then somebody landed on top of him… and then it looked like no one was around, but I thought it was the bump that threw him off balance.”
Antetokounmpo missed four games last month with a left groin strain but had appeared in Milwaukee’s past three games before Wednesday’s game.
Bucks, Antetokounmpo Mulling Future
The injury occurred hours after ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Antetokounmpo is discussing his future with the Bucks. The two-time NBA MVP and his agent, Alex Saratsis, are having conversations with the team and deciding whether his best fit is with Milwaukee or elsewhere.
Rivers has downplayed the trade rumors several times now.
“So, here we go again. There’s been no conversations,” Rivers told reporters, per Eric Nehm of The Athletic. “I want to make it clear for the – I want to say one more time – for the 50th time, and clearly it’s not getting to one network, for sure, Giannis has never asked to be traded. Ever. I can’t make that more clear. … I talk to the source every single day, every single day. And he loves Milwaukee and he loves the Bucks.”
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst also went viral on Wednesday after reporting that Antetokounmpo “asked to be traded already” prior to the season.
Windhorst talked more about his comments while on Thursday’s edition of ESPN’s Get Up.
“Doc can say with a straight face that there was no trade demand, and I think that’s true. He didn’t demand it,” Windhorst said of Antetokounmpo. “However, those [offseason] discussions [with the Knicks] were not the Bucks’ idea, I assure you.”
The Bucks are currently 10-13 and have lost eight of their past 10 games. They rank 10th in the Eastern Conference standings and have gone 8-9 against conference opponents.
