Buffalo Bills Once Again Turn to Fans to Dig Out Highmark Stadium

As the Buffalo Bills prepare for Week 18 at Highmark Stadium, the team has officially put out the call once again for fans to help clear snow from the iconic venue. In a team announcement on Thursday, the Bills invited volunteers over age 18 to sign up to shovel and remove snow ahead of the game against the New York Jets.

Buffalo Bills Hiring Snow Shovelers For $20

Prospective snow shovelers will be paid $20 per hour, receive hot beverages and food, and the first 500 to show up will get branded winter gloves as the franchise celebrates the stadium’s final regular-season game.

This isn’t the first time the Bills have turned to their devoted fan base for help in battling Mother Nature. In recent seasons, the team repeatedly leaned on Bills Mafia to help dig out Highmark Stadium during brutal winter weather.

During the 2023–24 playoff stretch, fans were recruited to shovel massive snow accumulations ahead of both the Wild Card game against the Pittsburgh Steelers and a Divisional matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs. Those efforts saw volunteers working long hours, bundled up against steep snowfall, even as temperatures hovered well below freezing.

The tradition goes back even further. As far back as 2014, the Bills famously asked supporters to help clear tremendous snowstorms from the stadium so scheduled games could proceed. In one instance, organizers estimated thousands of tons of snow needed moving, and even offered a game ticket and modest pay to those willing to brave the chill.

For many fans, these snow-shoveling calls are more than just a job or a community service. They’ve become something of a rite of passage and a point of pride, with Bills Mafia’s willingness to show up in force.

This may be the last time, too. The Bills are moving into a new stadium next year, one that features a canopy that will cover a reported 64% of the fans. Newer stadiums typically have more advanced methods for snow removal than their older counterparts (i.e., Highmark Stadium), so the remaining 36% probably won’t have to be shoveled out by fans of the team.
