Texas A&M’s Buzz Williams is set to become the next head coach of the Maryland Terrapins’ men’s basketball team.

Buzz Williams To Maryland

Per CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, Maryland will hire Williams as the program’s next coach.

The move ends Williams’ six-season tenure at Texas A&M. After missing the NCAA Tournament the first three seasons, Williams led the Aggies to three consecutive appearances, including this past season.

Williams ends his tenure at Texas A&M with a record of 120–73 in six seasons.

Before A&M, Williams was the head coach at New Orleans (2006-2007), Marquette (2008-2014), and Virginia Tech (2014-2019).

Williams has made 11 NCAA tournaments in 18 years as a head coach. His best season came in 2012–13, when he led Marquette to the Elite Eight.

Williams’ career record is 373-228.

Williams is coming off a 23-11 season with Texas A&M, finishing fifth in the SEC and earning a No. 4 seed in the 2025 NCAA Tournament.

After defeating Yale in the opening round, the Aggies fell to Michigan in the second round.

How Long Is Buzz Williams’ Contract?

Per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Williams and Maryland have agreed to terms on a six-year contract.

Williams replaces Kevin Willard, the former Maryland head coach who departed for Villanova.

Willard had an unceremonious exit from Maryland. Despite leading the Terps to the Sweet 16, Willard publicly criticized the athletic department and its commitment to the basketball program.

Williams’ buyout to leave Texas A&M is $1 million. With Maryland receiving $2 million from Villanova for Willard, the A&M buyout is a price worth paying.

Williams has turned three Power Five schools into consistent NCAA Tournament teams.

Maryland is coming off a Sweet 16 appearance, their first since 2016.

The Terrapins have not made the Final Four since 2002. Under Gary Williams, Maryland won the National Championship that season, the only one in program history.
