Can Slovakia win a second consecutive ice hockey medal at Winter Olympics?

At the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, one of the biggest stories was the fact that Slovakia won a medal in ice hockey for the first time. They captured the bronze medal after defeating Sweden 4-0.

The Slovakian stars in this historic occasion were goaltender Patrik Rybar, who currently plays for the Kontinental Hockey League’s Shanghai Dragons, Juraj Slafkovsky, the first overall pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens, and Pavol Regenda of Michalovce, who is an undrafted left winger for the San Jose Sharks. Rybar made 28 saves for the shutout, Slafkovsky scored twice, and Regenda had one goal and one assist for two points.

The Slovaks are part of Pool B with Sweden, Finland and Italy. This past Thursday, Team Slovakia was announced for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games. On the roster are seven NHL players. Joining the aforementioned Regenda and Slafkovsky are defensemen Simon Nemec of the New Jersey Devils and Martin Fehervary of the Washington Capitals, Erik Cernak of the Tampa Bay Lightning, and centres Martin Pospisil of the Calgary Flames and Dalibor Dvorsky of the St. Louis Blues.

Regenda and Nemec have scored hat tricks this season. Nemec accomplished the feat in a 4-3 Devils win over the Chicago Blackhawks on November 12. Nemec’s hat trick was noteworthy because he was the first defenseman to record a hat trick in the NHL this season. The only other defenseman to have a hat trick in a NHL game this season was Darren Raddysh of Toronto, Ontario, who scored thrice in a 7-3 Tampa Bay Lightning win over the San Jose Sharks on January 3. Ironically, the player to score all three goals in the game for the Sharks was Regenda, as he had his first NHL hat trick. What was also notable about this game  is the fact that Regenda and Raddysh both went undrafted and registered a hat trick on opposing teams in the same NHL contest.

Medal outlook

It is going to be very challenging for Slovakia to reach the Olympic podium. At first glance the reason will be goaltending. With Jaroslav Halak now retired, Slovakia does not have a goaltender on their team with NHL experience. The Slovakian goalies on the Olympic roster are Adam Gajan, Samuel Hlavaj, and Stanislav Skorvanek. Gajan was the Slovakian goaltender at the 2023 and 2024 World Junior Hockey Championships.
