Who is representing Canada this weekend?
The Canadian participants have been Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario and Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal, Quebec. Andreescu and Auger-Aliassime have a rich history representing Canada. Andreescu is Canada’s only grand slam singles champion, and made Canadian tennis history in 2019 when she beat Serena Williams of the United States in the US Open final, 6-3, 7-5. Auger-Aliassime reached the semifinal of the 2021 US Open, and has recent mixed doubles success as he won the bronze medal with Gabriela Dabrowski of Ottawa. Ontario at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. That statistic has significance here because mixed doubles is a significant part of the Hopman Cup. It is the tie-breaking match if the nations split their singles and doubles match.
Who is representing Italy this weekend?
While Canada has two of their best players representing them, Italy does not have Jannik Sinner this week for this International Tennis Federation event that is similar in format to the United Cup in Australia. However, Flavio Cobolli of Italy is still ranked higher than Auger-Aliassime in the ATP Rankings. Cobolli is 19th and Auger-Aliassime is 28th. Cobolli will bring confidence into the final in Bari because he recently made the quarterfinals of Wimbledon.
Meanwhile on the women’s side, Italy’s female representative, Lucia Bronzetti is ranked 64th and Andreescu is ranked 185th. Even though Bronzetti is ranked 121 places higher than Andreescu, one must realize it is Andreescu that has a stronger resume. The reason why Andreescu is ranked so low is because she is coming back from a significant leave of absence where she had to deal with mental health issues and physical injuries.
