Boxing’s biggest name and the sport’s most polarizing star are on the verge of signing a bout agreement. Per ESPN’s Mike Coppinger, Canelo Alvarez and Jake Paul are finalizing a deal to fight later this spring.

Canelo Alvarez Vs. Jake Paul Details

Per Coppinger, Alvarez and Paul are expected to fight on May 3 in Las Vegas.

The fight would be contested at a cruiserweight limit of 200 pounds.

Netflix will reportedly broadcast the fight.

The fight between Alvarez and Paul comes days after reports surfaced about the Mexican fighter signing an agreement to fight Terrance Crawford on Sept. 13 for the super middleweight championship.

Alvarez vs. Crawford was scheduled to become the first fight at Allegiant Stadium, the home of the Las Vegas Raiders.

Ring Magazine reported that the fight was off.

Coppinger’s report states Alvarez’s decision to fight Paul jeopardizes the Crawford fight. Turki Alalshikh, the chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority and organizer of Alvarez vs. Crawford, is currently looking to pair Crawford with another opponent later this year.

Implications Of Alvarez Vs. Paul

For Alvarez, there is nothing left to prove as a professional boxer.

Alvarez already has a strong legacy as one of the greatest fighters of his generation.

Alvarez has won multiple championships across different weight classes. Alvarez is 62-2-2 (39 KOs) in his career.

Fighting Paul would result in an enormous payday for the 34-year-old.

For Paul, a fight against Alvarez would solidify his meteoric rise to the top of boxing. Even without championships, Paul is one of the biggest draws in the sport.

Paul’s fight against Mike Tyson became the most streamed global sporting event ever, with over 108 million live global viewers on Netflix.

Paul vs. Tyson at AT&T Stadium earned a gate revenue of $18,117,072, the ninth-highest combat sports gate in U.S. history. This doubled the previous Texas record of $9 million set by Alvarez vs. Billy Joe Saunders in 2021.
