Carey Price will forever be linked to the Montreal Canadiens. In his prime, he was an elite National Hockey League goaltender and praised for his high level of consistency. However in recent seasons he has not played since the 2021-22 NHL regular season, due to the fact he has been dealing with mental health issues and a serious knee injury.
Unlikely to play again
Price is 37 years old and it is highly unlikely he will ever be a goaltender again. There have been rumours of Price retiring, but no official word has been announced yet.
One more year left on his contract
The reason why a Price trade seems likely is because he has one more year left on his contract where he is set to earn $10.5 million. The Canadiens could try to find a way to trade Price to another organization that would pay a strong portion of Price’s salary, so the Canadiens could acquire a position in need-specifically a second line center. The bottom line is the Canadiens could trade Price to an organization that is in the process of rebuilding and trying to reach the salary cap floor. Last season, the salary cap floor was $65 million. A day ago, the Chicago Blackhawks were rumoured to be in the Carey Price talks. Today, I am hearing that the San Jose Sharks are possibly in the mix.
Carey Price’s career statistics and accomplishments
Price has played in 712 NHL regular season games (all with the Canadiens) and has a record of 361 wins, 261 regulation losses and 79 losses in extra time. He has a goals against average of 2.51, save percentage of .917 and 49 shutouts.
Price’s finest NHL season came in 2014-15, when he led the NHL in wins (44), a spectacular goals against average of 1.96 and a save percentage of .933. This was the second time in Price’s career he led the NHL in wins as he had 38 victories in 2010-11. Also in 2014-15, Price was selected to the NHL All-Star Game for the fourth time, and won four prestigious trophies (Ted Lindsay Award, Hart Trophy, William M. Jennings and the Hart).
How could one forget how much Price sparkled during the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi in leading Canada to a gold medal? Price had a perfect record of five wins and zero losses with an incredible goals against average of 0.59 and save percentage of .971.
Update: Price was traded by the Canadiens to the Sharks on September 5.Â
