Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz and Alex de Minaur put on a great show in the ABN AMRO Open Rotterdam final.  Alcaraz was wearing a nasal strip due to a cold, and de Minaur was reportedly under the weather. Both battled through and produced excellent tennis in the three-set match.

The speed and agility of both players produced some amazing rallies. Alcaraz won the first set but suffered backhand errors in the second as de Minaur raised his level.  The third set was about who could outlast the other, and Alcaraz was up to the task today.  The final score was 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

The Rotterdam Open is among the most esteemed ATP 500 tournaments on the men’s tennis calendar whose maiden champion was Arthur Ashe in 1972.  Daniil Medvedev and Jannik Sinner are the 2023 and 2024 champions.

Big Win For Carlos Alcaraz And Spanish Tennis

Alcaraz has Spanish tennis greats who preceded him, most notably Rafael Nadal and Alcaraz’s coach Juan Carlos Ferrero.  Neither has ever captured a Rotterdam Open title.  Alcaraz is the first Spaniard to win in Rotterdam.

It is the first tournament win for Alcaraz since last October’s China Open in Beijing and his 17th career title.

He nearly did not reach the final after a grueling come-from-behind semifinal win against Hubert Hurkacz.

Men’s Tennis Continues To Be Dominated By Sinner and Alcaraz

While there are contenders such as Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, and de Minaur around them, men’s tennis seems to be a two-man race between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

Both have managed the pressure to perform at a high level. Sinner, 23, has 19 career titles with Alcaraz, 21, chasing him.  Barring injury or some calamity outside of either of their control, it feels like the biggest results of the 2025 season will be decided between these two players.  Because Alcaraz is currently ranked World No. 3, his journey this season is more complicated in big tournaments because he will either share a section of the draw with Sinner or World No. 2 Zverev.
