Cedrick Coward Transfer Portal: Alabama Making Big Push, Leads Kansas and Washington in Race to be Coward’s Next Team

Cedric Coward is one of the most sought-after names left in the college basketball transfer portal. After a breakout year at Washington State, his recruitment has drawn interest from several high-major programs. But according to recent reports, Alabama is now the frontrunner, with Kansas and Washington trailing. Even though the NBA is on the table too, the NIL opportunities at Alabama may be the ultimate lure for Coward.
Why Alabama Leads for Cedrick Coward
Alabama is reportedly in a strong position with Coward. With Mark Sears off to the NBA and freshman guard Labaron Philon gone, the Tide are in the market for immediate scoring and perimeter production. Coward, who averaged 17.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game before a shoulder injury, fits the bill.
His efficiency jumps off the page—Coward shot 55.7% from the field, 40% from three, and 84% from the line in limited action. He brings size (6’6”), strength, and versatility, all traits Alabama needs on the wing. Nate Oats has made it clear he wants a more physical, athletic roster, and Coward gives him that.
Kansas Still In the Mix for Coward
Kansas isn’t out of it yet. The Jayhawks already added guards Tre White and Jayden Dawson this offseason, but Coward offers a different skill set. He’s more physical than either and plays with a downhill edge that would pair well with Dajuan Harris.
If Kansas can’t close on Melvin Council, their push for Coward could intensify. But right now, Alabama seems to be ahead.
Washington’s Familiarity May Not Be Enough
Washington has the regional connection and could offer Coward a starring role. He played at Eastern Washington and Washington State, so staying in the Pacific Northwest would be a comfortable move.
Still, sources suggest Washington is behind in the NIL conversation and may not be able to compete with what Alabama is offering. Washington is still in the picture, but momentum is fading.
What’s Next?
Coward is testing the NBA Draft waters, but most expect him to return to college. A decision could come by early May. Right now, Alabama looks like the most likely landing spot.
