Charleston Open WTA Tournament Website’s Big Error Had Tennis Fans Excited

The Credit One Charleston Open WTA 500 tournament is the only clay court women’s event in the US. Owned by Emma Navarro‘s parents, this tournament is a popular stop for the top players on the WTA Tour. It is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
Though action officially starts next week, it made headlines early with what turned out to be a big mistake on its newly relaunched website. That mistake had tennis fans even more excited for this event.
Charleston Open Website Error
In the section of the website that lists players committed to play, former World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty was pictured and named. Ash Barty walked away from tennis at the height of her popularity in the spring of 2022 to embark on new things. Among those new things was starting a family. Barty and her husband, Garry Kissick, had a son in July 2023, and over Christmas, she announced that she is expecting her second child later this year.

Quite a surprise. Must be an error but it did get me dreaming pic.twitter.com/EQ1J0wxE9N

Tennis fans were thinking with their hearts and not their heads. Presumably, Barty is months away from giving birth while chasing a toddler around, so she is not embarking upon a comeback.
The last time Barty played the Charleston Open was 2021 as the top seed. She was upset in straight sets in the quarterfinals by unseeded Paula Badosa who unfortunately had to withdraw from this year’s tournament because of injury.

Corrected Website And Statement
There was such a furry over Barty’s picture that the tournament was forced to issue a X statement to curtail the craziness.
Looks like our new website got a little too excited and accidentally listed Ashleigh Barty as a wildcard recipient. We promise the only surprises moving forward will be on the court! 🎾
