Chiefs’ DE Chris Jones Goes Viral For Effort On Jaguars’ Game-Winning TD

The Kansas City Chiefs fell short 31-28 in a disappointing loss versus the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday Night Football. Jaguars’ QB Trevor Lawrence scored the game-winning touchdown after stumbling while receiving the snap from under center in one of the most bizarre sequences you will ever see.

Did Chris Jones Give Up On Trevor Lawrence’s TD Run?

But perhaps even more surprising was Chiefs’ Pro Bowl defensive end Chris Jones’s effort on the play. The six-time Pro Bowler and three-time Super Bowl champion simply stood still and walked while Lawrence fell twice before breaking a tackle and rumbling into the end zone for the game-winning score. Jones, who has compiled 31 sacks over the last three seasons combined, didn’t bother giving any effort on a play that could ultimately define the Chiefs’ season.

Now, there’s a chance that Jones thought his teammates were going to get to Lawrence once he fell to the ground but that doesn’t explain why he showed no urgency once he got up, started running, and broke a tackle on the way to the end zone.

Jones’s effort, or lack thereof, was one of the many mental mistakes made by the Chiefs in the loss. Prior to Jacksonville’s touchdown drive, kicker Harrison Butker sent the kickoff out of bounds, giving the Jaguars excellent field position. Patrick Mahomes threw a rare pick-six  in the red zone and backup linebacker Jack Cochrane committed two costly special teams penalties, including one with just 23 seconds remaining to halt any hope of a late-game comeback.

Chiefs On Outside Looking In At AFC Playoff Picture

At 2-3, the Chiefs find themselves in third place in the AFC West standings and on the outside looking in at the playoff picture. However, there’s still plenty of time to right the ship, but they’ll have to rebound quickly, especially with another primetime matchup against the Detroit Lions on tap for Week 6.

Kansas City also has two more games against the division-rival Denver Broncos on the schedule but the Chiefs have a lot to clean up over the final 12 regular season games.

Jones, meanwhile, is in the midst of a poor start with only one sack in the first five games. He’s on pace for just 3.5 sacks, which would mark his lowest total since his rookie season in 2016.
