Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, Minshew is signing a one-year contract with the Chiefs.
Minshew spent 2024 as a member of the Las Vegas Raiders. Minshew signed a two-year, $25 million contract with the Raiders during the 2024 offseason.
Las Vegas brought Minshew in to compete with Aidan O’Connell. Minshew won the quarterback competition and became the opening-day starter.
Minshew struggled through the first month and was benched for O’Connell after Week 5. Minshew returned as the starter in Week 8 before suffering a season-ending collarbone injury in Week 11.
Minshew finished 2-7 as the Raiders’ starter, throwing for 2,013 yards, nine touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in 10 games.
The Raiders released Minshew this offseason and traded for Geno Smith.
Minshew has proven that he’s a capable quarterback when asked to play.
2023 was Minshew’s best season, when he went 7-6 as the starter of the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts fell one game short of the postseason.
The Jacksonville Jaguars selected Minshew in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Minshew spent time with the Jaguars (2019-2020) and Philadelphia Eagles (2021-2022) before signing with the Colts in 2023.

There will be no quarterback competition in Kansas City.
Minshew is being brought in as Mahomes’ backup.
Minshew is now the Chiefs’ fourth different backup quarterback in four seasons.
Chad Henne was Mahomes’ backup for several seasons and elected to retire after the Chiefs defeated the Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.
The Chiefs signed Blaine Gabbert in April 2023. Kansas City won the Super Bowl again that season. Gabbert has not signed with a team since his contract expired in March 2024.
Last season, the Chiefs signed Carson Wentz to be Mahomes’ backup. Wentz started for the Chiefs in Week 18 since the team locked up the No. 1 seed. Wentz completed 10 of 17 passes for 98 yards and zero touchdowns in the Chiefs’ 38-0 loss to the Denver Broncos.
Minshew will now replace Wentz as the Chiefs’ primary backup.
