Novak Djokovic

ATP tennis fans could not see this one coming; this is the perfect time for it to happen.  Days after saying goodbye to Rafael Nadal at the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga, Spain, Novak Djokovic surprised the world by choosing a legendary coach to be on his team for the 2025 Australian Open.

Djokovic has operated without a coach since parting ways with Goran Ivanisevic earlier this year.  (Ivanisevic will be coaching Elena Rybakina in 2025.)  He is selecting a fellow tennis legend, Andy Murray, to coach him.  Murray retired from professional tennis this summer after inspiring and emotional matches at Wimbledon and the Paris Olympics.  He recently announced his British theatre tour in the Summer of 2025.

Given Murray’s affinity and unwavering support for women’s tennis, some thought he would be a WTA player’s coach, but this arrangement is equally satisfying for tennis fans interested in seeing how the two legends work together and what results Djokovic achieves in Melbourne with Murray on his team.

Murray Is Novak Djokovic’s Four-Time Foe In Melbourne

Surprisingly, Djokovic selected Murray to coach him at the 2025 Australian Open since Murray never won this event.  He reached the final five times (2010, 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2016). He lost the 2010 final to Roger Federer and the other four finals to Djokovic.

In a full circle moment, Murray could end up in the winner’s circle in Melbourne as Djokovic’s coach.

Murray and Djokovic have plenty in common.  Besides being tennis legends, the 37-year-olds were born a week apart (May 15, 1987, is Andy Murray’s birthday, and May 22, 1987, is Djokovic’s birthday.)

The 2025 tennis season can not come fast enough for fans to watch this partnership in action.
