Sydney Sweeney stands in the boxing ring.

Black Bear Pictures released the first trailer for Christy, an upcoming boxing biopic starring Sydney Sweeney as Christy Martin.

Watch: Sydney Sweeney in Christy Trailer

“I think I found my thing,” Christy says in the trailer before going into a training montage. “I bet most people go their entire lives, and they don’t even know what their thing is.”

Sweeney looks unrecognizable as Martin, the groundbreaking fighter who became the first female boxer to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated. Born in West Virginia, Martin wore pink in the ring and carried the nickname “The Coal Miner’s Daughter.”

Martin is a former WBC Superwelterweight Champion who competed from 1989 to 2012. Martin was elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020.

Christy chronicles Martin’s rise in the sport with her trainer-manager and eventual husband, Jim Martin, played by Ben Foster. The trailer previews cracks in Martin’s relationship, as Jim turns abusive.

Martin went to war in the ring, but her real battle happened outside the ropes, when she faced off against “family, identity, and a relationship with Jim that turns dangerous and life-threatening.

The cast includes Merritt Wever as Joyce Salters, Christy’s conservative mother; Katy O’Brian as Lisa Holewyne, Christy’s biggest boxing opponent; Ethan Embry as John Salters, Christy’s conservative father; Jess Gabor as Rosie, Christy’s high school girlfriend; and Chad L. Coleman as Don King, the world’s most famous boxing promoter.

Bryan Hibbard, Tony Cavalero, and Gilbert Cruz also star.

David Michôd directs Christy from a screenplay by Michôd and Mirrah Foulkes, based on a story by Katherine Fugate. Michôd is best known for directing 2010’s Animal Kingdom, an Australian crime thriller; 2017’s War Machine, a war comedy with Brad Pitt; and 2019’s The King, a historical drama starring Timothée Chalamet as Henry V.

Christy is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 7.

Could This Be Sydney Sweeney’s Oscar Moment?

Christy premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival on September 5.

The reviews are mixed to positive. However, Sweeney is receiving critical acclaim for her insane physical transformation to play Martin.

In a glowing review, Variety wrote that Sweeney gives “a potent, true-note, game-changing knockout of a performance.”

Indiewire wrote, “Sweeney is so credible in the role that the film seems made for big ovations at its conclusion.”

Gold Derby, a website that compiles predictions for awards shows, ranks Sweeney 10th among Best Actress contenders. Only five will be nominated at the Oscars.

A lot can change between now and nominations in January. Once more people see Christy, expect Sweeney to move up in the rankings and contend for a nomination.
