Myles Garrett, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year and the cornerstone of the Cleveland Browns defense since becoming the team’s first overall pick in 2017, is requesting a trade.

Garrett was recently seen at the Pro Bowl and held off sharing the news via social media until it was over. He has often expressed his love for Cleveland, which he considers his second home after his native Arlington, Texas. Garrett has invested in the arts to improve the city and is a minority owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Myles Garrett will turn 30 during the 2025 NFL season. In his eight seasons with the Browns, he has shattered franchise records.

What It Means

Garrett has always said that he does not care so much about individual accolades. He wants to win a Super Bowl and said the city of Cleveland deserves it.

By requesting a trade, it means that he does not think the Browns can reach that level while he is still in his prime.

Garrett is already likely a Hall of Famer, but he does not want to be like Joe Thomas and teammate Joel Bitonio, who spent their entire careers in Cleveland with limited opportunities.

Myles Garrett’s Contract

The Cleveland Browns signed him to a 5-year $125 million extension with two years remaining. He would be a free agent after the 2026 season.

What Will The Browns Do?

The Browns could use his request to make a trade for young players and/or draft picks to rebuild a team that has many needs, most notably at quarterback.  Garrett has weathered a lot of ups and downs with the Browns to only make the playoffs twice (and exit early) in 2020 and 2024.  Browns fans love Garrett and will continue to cheer for him from afar if he is traded so long as he is not playing against the Browns.

The Browns have said they will not trade Garrett, but this story is far from over.
