The Kansas City Chiefs are likely to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2014, and the growing consensus is that their dynastic run is coming to an end.
Chiefs Dynasty Is Over, According To Media Personalities
We saw the cracks in the foundation in 2024. Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City’s offense was limited last season, lacking the talent and big-play ability that used to surround the quarterback. But by way of late-game heroics as well as a few lucky breaks, the Chiefs still finished with an NFL-best record of 15-2, and made their 5th Super Bowl appearance in 6 seasons.

In the big game, though, they were dominated. At one point, they found themselves for 34-0 to the Eagles near the end of the 3rd quarter, and eventually lost by a tally of 40-22. There was obvious disappointment in Kansas City, but there was plenty of optimism about the team bouncing back and being contenders again in 2025.
That hasn’t been the case. Games that used to go Kansas City’s way almost by default are now slipping away. Historically, the Chiefs engineered close-game victories; last season they thrived in tight spots. But 2025 has told a different story. They are 0–5 in one-score games, which has contributed heavily to their 6-7 record, and what once was clutch has become a glaring weakness.
KC Must Win Out In Order To Have An Outside Shot At Postseason
According to multiple sports media personalities, the Chiefs’ dynasty is over. ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky said on Monday that the team’s downfall has been a few years coming, and Colin Cowherd gave a four-minute rant that included the following quote:
“This is how dynasties end.”
The talk is deserved after their crucial defeat on Sunday night. A home loss to the Houston Texans not only eliminated them from AFC West contention, but also dropped them into the fringes of the postseason picture, a scenario that would have been unthinkable only a few years ago.

The Chiefs had won nine straight division titles, a steak that will be snapped this season, and they’ll need a small miracle in order to keep their postseason streak alive. They’ll need to win each of their final four games in order to have a shot, and they’re slated to take on the division rival Los Angeles Chargers in Week 15. They are currently listed as 4.5-point favorites for that contest.
