The San Francisco 49ers have some health questions when it comes to their wide receiver group for the upcoming 2025 NFL season. They may be looking for some extra help at the position as training camp progresses, and one of the top free agent options appears to be interested in potentially joining the team.
49ers Already Thin At Wide Receiver Entering Training Camp
San Francisco could be looking for reinforcements sooner rather than later. Top option Brandon Aiyuk is still recovering from the ACL and MCL tears that he suffered midway through the 2024 campaign, and there is apparently no clear timetable for his return.
As if that wasn’t enough, second-year player Ricky Pearsall is starting training camp on the PUP list, and Jacob Cowing suffered a hamstring injury on the first day of practice.
San Francisco GM John Lynch told reporters today that 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk currently is “not anywhere close to having a concrete timeline” to return from the knee injury suffered last season.

There are still a handful of notable wide receivers that are available on the free agent market, including names like Keenan Allen and Amari Cooper. But if WR-needy teams are looking for a younger option at the position, then Gabe Davis might be the one they look at.
Davis is just 26 years old, and has plenty of NFL experience under his belt. After catching passes from Josh Allen in Buffalo to begin his career, he signed on with the Jaguars in 2024 but played in just ten games after suffering a knee injury.
He was subsequently released, due to both recovery concerns and the additions of Brian Thomas Jr. and Travis Hunter.

Davis still hasn’t signed on with any team as training camps around the league get underway, but he is anticipating joining a roster before the start of the regular season. One of the teams that he’d be most interested in is the 49ers, according to his own comments during an interview on Thursday.

While joining Kay Adams on The Up & Adams Show, Davis was asked about what he thought about the potential of playing in San Francisco.
“San Fran is definitely a spot that I’m looking at. Shanahan is the man, he knows how to call an offense right, and they just have a lot of great weapons around there.”
We are just a couple of weeks away from the first preseason game for the 49ers. They will take on the Denver Broncos on August 9th, at which point we should know more about the recoveries of the current wide receivers that they have on their roster.
In the 10 games that he played last season, Davis caught 20 passes for 239 yards and 2 touchdowns. It was easily the worst year of his NFL career, even on a per-game basis.
