The Dallas Mavericks have had one of the more disappointing starts of any NBA team over the first three weeks of the season. And amidst their 3-7 start to the 2025 campaign, there is a growing assumption that the team will be firing general manager Nico Harrison in the near future.
Mavericks Likely To Fire Nico Harrison Mid-Season
Harrison has been in the spotlight for nearly a year now. He was the face of deep disdain from Mavericks fans after the inexplicable Luka Dončić trade last winter, with many calling for his job immediately following the blunder. But he remained in his position as Dallas qualified for the Play-In Tournament at the end of the 2024-25 regular season, and received renewed life when the Mavericks lucked into the no.1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

But so far, Cooper Flagg and company have not lived up to expectations. The Mavericks have played one of the softer schedules in the NBA in their first ten games, and their only wins have come against the Washington Wizards, Indiana Pacers, and Toronto Raptors. The combined record of those three teams is currently 7-23.
They’ve endured losses at the hands of the Memphis Grizzlies, New Orleans Pelicans, and the Wizards. They currently have the lowest-scoring offense in the league at 106.5 points per contest, and only seven teams have a worse point differential thus far.
The Question Is Now When, Not If
According to Tim MacMahon, an NBA insider who focuses on Dallas basketball, trust between team owner Patrick Dumont and Harrison has “completely disintegrated”. When speaking on the Hoop Collective podcast on Monday morning, McMahon said that there is a strong likelihood that Harrison is fired at some point during the current season. He said that it is a matter of “when” and not “if” at this point, a process that will be expedited if the Mavericks continue their losing ways.

Harrison has held the job as the team’s GM since 2021. He had success initially with Dallas qualifying for two Western Conference Finals series in his first three seasons, and even making it to the NBA Finals in 2024. But things have gone downhill essentially ever since, with the Doncic trade being one of the biggest blemishes on any GM’s career in recent memory.
