Deion Sanders has taken a lowly college football program in the Colorado Buffaloes and boosted them into national relevance in recent years. But a 3-7 start to the 2025 season has some questioning whether he is safe in his head coaching job in Boulder, and the program’s athletic director addressed the situation directly on Tuesday.
Deion Sanders Has Backing Of Colorado’s Athletic Director
After finishing with a 4-8 record in his first season at the helm, Sanders turned things around in 2024. With Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders leading the on-field attack, the Buffaloes went 9-4 last year and qualified to play in the Alamo Bowl. But both players are gone, and so is much of the hype and positivity surrounding Colorado.

They’ve regressed heavily in 2025. After starting the season 2-2 against mostly non-conference opponents, they’ve dropped five of their last six contests, and are 1-6 in the conference overall. With two weeks remaining on the schedule, they are already ineligible for a postseason bowl game appearance.
Despite the struggles, there remains positivity surrounding the coach and his future. Sanders personally told reporters on Tuesday that he was the right guy for the job:
“You’ve got the right man. I promise you, you do. And I’m going to prove that to you. Just give me an opportunity and a little more time, and I’m going to prove that to you.”
In the wake of those comments, the program’s athletic director decided to chime in. When a fan reposted the footage of Sanders’ comments with a caption stating that the coach was likely on the hot seat, Rick George responded with a retweet of his own. It solidified Coach Prime’s current standing, with George stating plainly that the “seat is not hot”. He added that he believes in what is ahead for the program with Sanders at the helm.

Deion Sanders and the Buffaloes will take on 25th ranked Arizona State this coming Saturday, and are currently listed as 8.5-point underdogs. They will conclude the regular season with a game against Kansas State on Thanksgiving Weekend.
