The Detroit Pistons have been one of the biggest surprises of the 2024-25 NBA season, and are off to their best start in over 15 years.

Detroit Pistons Off To Their Best Start Since 2009

They’ve been one of the worst franchises in the NBA over the last decade-plus. After making six straight Eastern Conference Finals appearances between 2003 and 2008, the Pistons made the playoffs just twice in the 16 years since, never advancing past the first round. They have never finished better than third out of five in their division during that span, and have had one of the three worst records in the NBA in each of the last four seasons.

The oddsmakers at the sportsbooks had the Pistons’ over/under win total for 2024-25 set at 25.5. Entering All-Star Weekend, through the first 55 games of the season, they’ve already surpassed that mark. They have a record of 29-26, and are in 6th place in the East. It is the first time that they’ve entered the All-Star break over .500 since 2009.

The starting lineup for the Pistons that year included guys like Allen Iverson and Rasheed Wallace, and they were swept in the first round after sneaking into the playoffs as the 8th seed. That team was 27-24 at the break, the same 3 games over .500 that they are this year.

This year’s team is looking to have a stronger finish. Four years after being selected with the no.1 overall draft pick, Cade Cunningham has been voted to his first All-Star game, as his 25.4 points per game ranks 12th in the league. His 9.4 assists ranks third overall, and is posting a career-high in rebounds per game. Should he be able to keep up his production, the Pistons could remain afloat and above the Play-In slots in the postseason run.

Detroit is in the middle of the pack when it comes to remaining strength of schedule, with the 18th-toughest road in the NBA between now and mid-April. They’ll come back from the All-Star break by playing two road games in San Antonio and Atlanta, but will face a true test the week after. A three-game stretch that begins on February 24th consists of games against the Clippers, Celtics, and Nuggets.
