DJ Lagway To Enter Transfer Portal After Two Seasons With Florida

In 2025, the Florida Gators finished 4-8. That is their worst finish sicne 2013. Midway through the year, the team fired head coach Billy Napier after four seasons.

Florida hired Tulane’s Jon Sumrall as their next head coach. On Monday, December 15, the Gators’ program got unfortunate news. Starting QB DJ Lagway informed the team he is entering the transfer portal. Lagway wants to revamp his career similar to Bo Nix and Jayden Daniels. Where will he play next?

DJ Lagway is transferring from the Florida Gators

Coming out of high school, DJ Lagway was a top ten recruit in the country. He was ranked as ESPN’s #1 dual-threat QB. Lagway decided to take his talents to the Florida Gators. In October 2024, veteran QB Graham Mertz suffered a season-ending ACL tear. That forced five-star true freshman DJ Lagway into the spotlight for Florida. There were growing pains along the way during his freshman season. However, Lagway finished the year strong with four consecutive wins. That included two wins vs. ranked opponents.

Unfortunately, Lagway did not take a step forward in his sophomore season. He led the SEC with 14 interceptions. The Gators finished 4-8, and that forced Lagway to make a tough decision. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Monday that DJ Lagway is set to enter the transfer portal. Lagway also posted on social media to thank the University of Florida.

Pete Thamel reported that sources believe DJ Lagway wants to revamp his career. Similar to what Bo Nix and Jayden Daniels did when they transferred. Bo Nix played the first three seasons of his career with the Auburn Tigers. He transferred and spent two seasons with Oregon. That helped his NFL potential, and Nix was drafted 12th overall by Denver.

Jayden Daniels started his collegiate career with Arizona State. He spent three seasons with the Sun Devils and transferred to LSU for his final two years. In 2024, Jayden Daniels won the Heisman Trophy at LSU. Subsequently, he was the #2 pick in the 2024 NFL draft. DJ Lagway hopes to find a new program that can help elevate his game. Former Florida head coach Billy Napier was unable to make that happen. Where will the talented dual-threat QB play next?
