The matchup for the 2025 NFC Championship is set, as the Philadelphia Eagles will host the Washington Commanders on Sunday, with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line. And while the rivalry between the divisional opponents dates back over 90 years, they’ve only met in the postseason one time before.

Eagles Will Meet Commanders For Just Second Playoff Matchup Ever

The first game between the two franchises took place back in 1934. Philadelphia took on the then-Boston Redskins in the second year of existence for the Eagles, which ended with a 6-0 victory for Boston. They’ve played a total of 180 times since then, the 6th most games played between any two teams in NFL history, with Washington leading the series by a thin margin of 90-85-5.

But only one of those games has come during the playoffs. That contest happened back in 1991, between NFC East teams that both finished with 10-6 regular season records. The Eagles were the home team thanks to a tiebreaker, and entered as 4.5-point favorites. But Redskins quarterback Mark Rypien out dueled the Eagles’ Randall Cunningham, holding Philadelphia to just two field goals on the day. Washington was able to advance by winning by a final score of 20-6.

The Redskins would go on to lose in the next round to the San Francisco 49ers.

Philly Opens As A 5-Point Favorite

The Commanders are hoping for similar results this season. The second ever postseason matchup between the two sides will once again be played in Philadelphia, and the Eagles will come in as 5-point favorites. But rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and company have already overcome two underdog statuses in their first two playoff games this year, including a +8.5 designation against the Detroit Lions in the Divisional Round.

Washington has already enjoyed some success against Philly this year, as well. The first matchup in Week 11 ended in an Eagles victory, but it was a different story in Week 16. Daniels led his team on a 2-minute drive in the second meeting, eventually completing a game-winning touchdown pass with 6 second left in the game. The victory pushed the Commanders’ record to 10-5.
