“You can’t stop authenticity,” Kenny “The Jet” Smith says in the trailer for Boo-Yah: A Portrait of Stuart Scott.
The upcoming 30 for 30 chronicles the life and legacy of Scott, a trailblazer at ESPN who rose to prominence as an anchor on SportsCenter. Scott tragically lost his battle to cancer in 2015, dying at the age of 49.
Boo-Yah is a reference to one of Scott’s most famous catchphrases. Scott brought a mix of analysis, pop culture, and swagger to television, and this combination proved to be a winning formula.
The 30 for 30 depicts Scott’s roots in North Carolina and traces his meteoric rise from local television to ESPN. Scott also became a pioneer in the broadcast space, serving as a guiding light for millions of fans and aspiring broadcasters, especially within the Black community.
“Stuart Scott didn’t just change sports journalism — he changed culture. He made millions of people feel seen at a time when few voices like his were given the mic,” said producer and director Andre Gaines. “What makes his story even more powerful is that Stuart was documenting his own life along the way — the father, the fighter, and the trailblazer who taught us all what authenticity looks like. His voice is woven through every frame, and we wanted to honor his legacy by letting him tell his story in his own words.”
Boo-Yah is executive produced by ESPN Films, Run & Shoot Filmworks, and Cinemation Studios. The documentary will premiere on December 10 at 9 p.m. ET. It will air on ESPN and stream on the ESPN app.

The premiere coincides with ESPN’s 19th Annual V Week for Cancer Research. The V Foundation’s Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund supports research and underrepresented scientists looking to end cancer disparities.
Stuart became a symbol of hope as he publicly battled cancer. Less than six months before his death, Scott accepted the 2014 Jimmy V Award at the ESPYs and delivered one of the ceremony’s best speeches of all time.
ESPN will sell merchandise to honor Scott and Jim Valvano at the Jimmy V Classic. ESPN will donate 100% of the royalties from the merchandise to the V Foundation.
