Alexandra Eala

Mirra Andreeva is not the only teenager making waves in the WTA. Alexandra Eala, the 19-year-old Filipina left-hander who trains at Rafael Nadal’s tennis academy got the biggest win of her career on Friday at the Miami Open.

Eala defeated World No. 25 and Grand Slam champion Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets, 7-6, 7-5. This win eclipsed her previous biggest win, in the first round of the Miami Open, against American Katie Volynets, who is ranked 73rd.

Alexandra Eala is currently ranked 140th. Her best results have come on the ITF Tour.  It is the second time she has advanced to the second round of a WTA 1000 tournament, the first was last year in Madrid.

Eala is the pride of the Philippines in a sport not commonly associated with the country best known for boxing because of Manny “The Pacman” Pacquiao’s success.  She aspires to be as successful as Pacquiao was in his sport.

Another Grand Slam Champion Opponent In The Next Round

After defeating one Grand Slam champion, Eala could face another in the Miami Open Round of 32.  She is set to play the winner of the Madison Keys and Elina Avanesyan match.  Keys is World No. 5 and the 2025 Australian Open champion.  Avanesyan is ranked 36th with a 10-8 win-loss record in 2025.

In the meantime, Eala will enjoy this amazing win which will certainly get the attention of her tennis idol, Rafael Nadal.
