A animatronic stares in Five Nights at Freddy's 2.

This weekend, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 will look to scare its way to the top of the box office. Can this horror sequel surpass the highs of its predecessor?

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2: What is it about?

The evil animatronics return in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2.

The sequel picks up one year after the events inside Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. The rumors of the lively animatronics have been mythologized, so much so that the town will run Fazfest.

Josh Hutcherson returns as Mike, a former security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza who witnessed these creatures come to life. Alongside police officer Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail), Mike has withheld the horrors he saw from his 11-year-old sister, Abby (Piper Rubio), who considers the animatronics as friends.

“But when Abby sneaks out to reconnect with Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy,” the official synopsis reads, “it will set into motion a terrifying series of events, revealing dark secrets about the true origin of Freddy’s and unleashing a long-forgotten horror hidden away for decades.”

The other returning cast members are Theodus Crane as Jeremiah and Matthew Lillard as William Afton. The new cast includes Freddy Carter, Wayne Knight, Mckenna Grace, and Skeet Ulrich.

Emma Tammi returns to direct Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 from a screenplay by Scott Cawthon, who created the video game franchise of the same name. Cawthon is a producer alongside Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions.

In 2023, Five Nights at Freddy’s received a day-and-date release, meaning it opened in theaters and on Peacock on the same day. The streaming release did not hinder the movie’s box office performance at all, as it overperformed and blew by expectations.

Released in October 2023, Five Nights at Freddy’s opened to $80 million at the North American box office. At nearly $300 million worldwide, Five Nights at Freddy’s remains Blumhouse’s highest-grossing movie of all time.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is not going to open to $80 million. With competition from Zootopia 2 and Wicked: For Good, the horror sequel will likely not even win the weekend.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 should still have a solid opening, but the projections are all over the place. Variety listed a conservative estimate of $35 million to $40 million in its opening weekend.

Polymarket listed the odds for the opening weekend, and a haul of over $57 million (+186) is currently the favorite.

The only guarantee: If Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 opens north of $60 million, there will be a Five Nights at Freddy’s 3.

Update: Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 exceeded expectations with an opening weekend of $64 million.
